      <image:title>People - ALEJANDRA JUNO RODRÍGUEZ VILLAR</image:title>
<image:caption>ALEJANDRA JUNO RODRÍGUEZ VILLAR started playing theater in her native Galicia when she was seven. At the age of 12, she won her first acting award, and since then, she has not stopped stepping on all kinds of stages. Her theatrical career is very similar to that of the old traveling actors, from large theaters to improvised boards in small towns. Convinced of the immense value of the cultural legacy, her love for outreach and pedagogy made her focus on the classical repertoire. From Gil Vicente to the performance of autos sacramentales in churches, through Carlos Arniches' interludes in the open air on summer nights, her life in the theater has been marked by reviving the magnificent creations of Spanish theatre. Today, as an Associate Professor of Spanish at Hanover College, she transmits that same love to her students, who, under her direction, create tv-movies about great Spanish Golden Age texts.</image:caption>

And probably most perplexing, how is it possible that he, a man, is pregnant? <image:title>Second Hands and The Ladies' Man (2019) - Second Hands and The Ladies’ Man (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>A self-described “ropavejera de la vida” operates a peculiar shop where, instead of second-hand apparel, customers purchase actual second hands in an effort to upgrade their aging features. Meanwhile, when Constanzo is summoned to his bedroom window at night by three women professing their love he tries unsuccessfully to send them away. Dragoncillo’s innovative use of shadow puppetry offers an energetic, cartoon-inspired take on two plays by 17th-century writer, Francisco de Quevedo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Second Hands and The Ladies' Man (2019) - El Marión</image:title>
<image:caption>The play invokes laughs by inverting traditional gender expectations. Constanzo is a young man summoned to his bedroom window at night by three women who appear one after another in the street below. Worried that his father will discover him and his admirers, Constanzo tries unsuccessfully to shoo them away. When the last woman arrives with musicians in tow his father appears just as the quarrel among competitors erupts into street fight. Both father and son worry aloud over honor lost before Dad shrugs the question off and invites the musicians to play on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Second Hands and The Ladies' Man (2019) - LA ROPAVEJERA</image:title>
<image:caption>The play introduces us to the title character Ropavejera, who proclaims herself a “ropavejera de la vida” who operates a peculiar shop where, instead of second-hand apparel, customers purchase actual second hands in an effort to upgrade their aging features. “Pues los cuerpos humanos,” Ropavejera assures us, “son de punto, como calza de aguja.” One by one the shopkeeper attends to her clients. Sancha enters looking for a new set of teeth. Crisostomo walks away with a handsome pair of legs. Godinez buys a more attractive face. Ortega picks up a mustache and Ana gets en elegant pair of hands. Business is booming and a group of travelling musicians sing the praises of this curious enterprise.</image:caption>

Her presentation illustrated how these kinds of subtitles empower bilingualism in Hispanic communities and beyond: “Public Facing Humanities is one of the most vibrant fields of Early Modern Studies and collaborations such as this one shows the importance of making available bilingual content for K-12 students”. The company gave performances and workshops for schools in the Grand Rapids community, at Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, IA), Meredith College (Raleigh, NC) Southern Indiana University (Evansville, IN), and Michigan State University (Lansing, MI). <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - ACTS OF DISPLACEMENT</image:title>
<image:caption>Under the direction of Esther Fernández, the goal of this course/workshop at Rice University was to give students the opportunity to approach Spanish dramatic literature through a creative and experiential learning process. We focused on a selection of contemporary Spanish plays that address the notion of exodus through which we considered the current refugee crisis in dialogue with political corruption, deportation, and harassment and violence against refugee women. While half of the course was devoted to studying the plays from a literary, critical and analytical lens, the other half was dedicated to exploring theatre through various aspects of staging, such as dramaturgy, acting, translation, setting, costume and sound design. Students worked in groups to create a series of original plays and pedagogical material to perform outreach around, the topic of the refugees, migration and exile. Puppets were the main artistic form to communicate these stories.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - “No Soy”</image:title>
<image:caption>Artists’ Statement “No soy” [I’m Not] is based on a poem by Arabic writer Jalal Al-Din Al-Rumi. Our rendition integrates three languages: English, Spanish, and Arabic, to convey the idea that a human being is not limited by social constructs and that the sharing of cultures can overcome all differences. The poem begins with each distinct language presenting a similar idea, but in their own individual ways. As it unfolds, the languages interact more and more with each other up until the moment they converge to form an uninterrupted harmony of thought.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - “El muro”</image:title>
<image:caption>Artists’ Statement El muro [The Wall] was inspired by Refugio [Refuge] (2017) by Miguel del Arco, a play about a Middle Eastern migrant, Farid, who, after losing his wife and son while crossing the sea, is taken into the home of a corrupt Spanish politician and his family. One of the major themes within Refugio is the profound isolation that Farid experiences – he feels alone in the midst of ruin and familial dysfunction, held back by linguistic and cultural barriers. In El muro, we adapt Farid’s story to the situation faced by Latin American migrants who move to the United States. In this contemporary political climate, the intimate experiences of those who cross the border between the United States and Mexico are often overshadowed, if not entirely forgotten. El muro explores the interpersonal effects of this crossing, particularly among the migrants themselves. We focus on representing varying types of distance – distance that exists across each side of the border, between freedom and oppression, between life and death. Many Americans still have harsh preconceptions about migrants, particularly those who are undocumented. The dialogue within El muro inverts the relation between migrant and native – a conversation that establishes a space to reflect on social and political progress, but also creates an idea of ‘otherness’. The migrant exists solely as a foil to the native, dehumanizing them. El muro, however, humanizes the migrant and engenders a profound empathy toward their experiences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - “La llave”</image:title>
<image:caption>Artists’ Statement La llave [The Key] is an adaptation of the play La frontera (2003) by Laila Ripoll and the short stories by Juan Rulfo from El llano en llamas (1953). It tells the story of a young man and his grandmother, an Spanish exile who left during the Spanish Civil War, in their journey through the desert to the U.S.-Mexican border. The action of the play centers itself on the dispute between the two of them, focusing on themes of cultural abandonment and the condition of the migrant outside of his or her native land. The history problematizes the meaning of “belonging to no place” for the migrant. Through an intergenerational conversation, we attempt to contextualize the difficulty of abandoning one’s homeland turning to a place where someone “has no roots.” The narrative demystifies the United States as a “land of opportunities,” an image that is fading day by day. The puppet that represents the grandmother is perched on the shoulders of the actor throughout the play. It symbolizes the weight on the conscience of younger generations. The puppet allows a physical representation of the grandmother’s ghost that returns to life in the mind of the young man. Her presence shows the duty of the young man to not abandon his customs or his family history while he treks on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - “Todo para ti”</image:title>
<image:caption>Artists’ Statement Todo para ti [Everything for you] is based on two shorts from Invisibles: Voces de un trozo invisible de este mundo by Juan Diego Botto (2013): (1) “La carta” narrates how two African children froze to death in the landing gear of a plane on their to Europe; (2) “Mujer” describes the life of a single mother who recounts her experience as a refugee in Spain to her son. In our rendition, the protagonist, Fodé Koita, is a Guinean child, hidden in the landing gear of a plan, in search of his mother. Fodé appears split into two beings: his physical body and his mind. The mother appears as an isolated character while she tells her story to her son, who she imagines by her side and who we bring to life with a puppet. The mother had to leave him behind when she took refuge in Europe. But what did she end up finding in that dreamed continent? At first, nothing more than abuse and dehumanization, but, little by little, she discovered her purpose. The only thing that was missing was her dear son, Fodé. Our puppet symbolizes all those refugees who were silenced or lost their lives in their search for something better. Todo para ti is a tribute to the richness found in the life of a refugee, to their dreams, their hopes, and their blissful moments. This work is dedicated to all those who have had to fight for a better life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Acts of Displacement (2019) - “Europa”</image:title>
<image:caption>Artists’ Statement “Europa” is based on several scenes from the play Refugio, written by Miguel Del Arco, in which the most prominent themes are corruption and the dire situation of refugees who embark in a new life in Europe. The title is based on the Greek myth of Europa, which the central character, Farid, references in the story to exalt the image of a mythological land that stands in stark contrast to present day Europe. As Farid seeks refuge from his own corruption and the problem that plagues his waking thoughts: the death of his wife and child, who drowned in the ocean in the past as they tried to reach the promised land. Farid is tormented by memories of the past and the present, as he is in search for the sanctuary that he so desperately seeks -- eternal silence of his dead wife. When Sima, his wife, haunts the thoughts of Farid, he is blaming himself for their drowning. Sima haunts his thoughts to remind him that he chose to save his own life instead of saving the lives of his loved ones. In that way, Farid is blaming himself for their deaths, because the character that haunts his thoughts is simply a figment of his imagination. He tells himself: “I returned to life to hopelessly long for death.” With this line, the man accepts that he will not find refuge in his corrupt life, but in death.</image:caption>

<image:title>SPA 350, Puppet Class - Not your usual Spanish class</image:title>
<image:caption>Using a variety of creative approaches, students in SPA 350 learn how to read, interpret, and analyze theater for young audiences in Spanish. In addition, students engage in the process of creative writing to develop their own performance script. Unlike other literature courses they may take, their studies here include the added goal of building linguistic proficiency and confidence specifically through performance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SPA 350, Puppet Class - Practice with a purpose</image:title>
<image:caption>Students develop theater and puppeteering skills such as character development, manipulation, staging, timing, and intonation, as tools to help them achieve their linguistic goals. Their mastery of theoretical and practical skills culminate in the sharing of a performance with members of the community in local schools, libraries, etc. In this way the concepts and experiences gained in the classroom not only enrich our communities but also help to make us better citizens, students, parents, and human beings.</image:caption>

Inspired by medieval reliquaries, each side of the box depicts scenes and symbols taken from woodcuts and was designed to look like a centuries-old trunk of mysteries carried from town-to-town on backs and in wagons by generations of puppeteers, magicians, and maybe witches!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The stage was hand-painted by award-winning artist and designer Jan Yancey. Jan Yancey resides in Richland, WA. ... (AKA the Tri Cities area / Columbia Basin). She has been happily married to her college sweetheart, Ed, for 45 years. They have 6 children, all raised having access to construction paper, scissors, colored pencils, paints, light boxes, tubs full of googly eyes, glitter and crafty supplies, and of course, fabric and a sewing machine. Today each and every one of them are talented and extremely creative in their own way. Jan and Ed now also have 15 grandchildren. And yes! Every one of them has a hand painted Christmas stocking and a custom designed quilt from Nana. In 2019, Jan was recognized as a featured artist in the Handi Quilt “And I Quilt” series. <image:title>Teatrino - “I am Jan Yancey”</image:title>
<image:caption>“I have always had a creative spirit! One of my first memories as a very young child was collecting crayon shavings from my Crayola box. I was mesmerized by the colors! Later, in junior high I was told by an art teacher that I had “absolutely no talent whatsoever so I should find something else to do with my life!” I was in my early twenties before I was able to push through those thoughtless remarks and follow the creative spirit that beckoned to me from my box of colors.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Teatrino - “I had finally found my tribe.”</image:title>
<image:caption>“I took my first painting class at a local craft store in 1980. When I walked out of that class I literally paused there on the sidewalk thinking “something amazing had just happened!” For the very first time I had some tools to follow those creative yearnings I’d not understood. As I stood there on the sidewalk that day I knew something wonderful was about to begin. Over the next couple of years I devoured every class and book I could find on art, design, color theory, paints and brushes, and everything that came with it. However, this was before the internet and our little community had very few resources available, So most of my knowledge and experiences are self taught through trial and error. It wasn’t long until I started teaching. After all, I knew from personal experience 100 ways to do everything wrong and how to fix it. One day while traveling I had a pivotal experience that would change the course of my painting experiences. We had stopped at a rest stop where I saw a license plate on a car that said “I love decorative painters!” I had a wonderful conversation with that stranger there in the parking lot. As it turned out, this lady just happened to have with her the most recent edition of a magazine from The NSDP (National Society of Decorative Painters) and graciously gave it to me. This wonderful organization was a Noah’s flood of information for me. Patterns with instructions, teachers, resources, conventions and workshops, all kinds of painting supplies and beautiful, color photos of exquisite paintings done by gifted artists. They also offered a jury-Certified Decorative Artist accreditation program which I would complete in May of 1993. I had finally found my tribe.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Teatrino - “Over the years I’ve satisfied my creative hunger in many other areas as well.”</image:title>
<image:caption>“I’ve done all the popular “crafty” things—macramé, wood carving, scrapbooking, cross stitch, crochet and knitting, book making—and the list goes on. But the only other thing that has captured my attention as much as painting was sewing. My mother was a very talented seamstress so I naturally began sewing at a very young age. I’ve made blessing gowns to wedding dresses and everything in between. I made my first quilt in 1975 and I’d dare say I’ve probably made hundreds since. My love of color theory and my understanding of the elements of good design applied to quilting just as it did with painting. A few years ago my husband surprised me with a long-arm quilt machine for Christmas! (Now that’s true love!) It’s a rare day to find it empty. My painting and quilting have recently presented some new challenges. I’ve taken some of my very detailed Rosemaling designs and quilted them. I have also painted on fabric and incorporated them in to my quilts. These two loves never cease to challenge and satisfy my creative pursuits. Today I spend most of my time quilting either my own originally-designed quilts or someone else’s beautiful creations.”</image:caption>

We’ve discovered some interesting similarities, including always having multiple projects going on at once, a “3D design room” in our brains that we can rapidly create and adjust ideas before they are ever on paper, an endless push to be doing something new, and knowing what the other will say before it is said—just to name a few. I was delighted to have the opportunity to work with him on his traveling puppet theatre. It has been such a fun project to work on together! We live on opposite sides of the country, so all our planning and collaboration has been through text messages, phone calls and Skype. Dozens and dozens of pictures have flown back and forth for weeks now! He sent me a file of pictures from which to draw inspiration, and From there it took about a week to create the designs for the box, followed by another month to paint it. I have well over 200 hours of work in this project – and every one of them was a labor of love for my Jason.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Teatrino - “A symbol of our work together.”</image:title>
<image:caption>“Jason asked me to put something on the box that represented me. No rules, no approval needed. Just do it. I knew exactly what to add. One of my favorite things to paint are butterflies. So the butterfly on the front is a representation of me and my creative input. I specifically put it right above Jason’s creation–his puppet troupe name—Dragoncillo. I wanted them to be next to each other, a symbol of our work together on this project. I think I can speak for both of us in saying this project has become one of the fondest memories of both our lives.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The award-winning, bilingual, shadow puppet adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ lovable lunatic, Don Quijote de La Mancha. As a work interpreted by shadow puppets, it takes full advantage of imaginative settings and scenarios to emphasize the novel’s intensely comical depiction of the ridiculous, with all the clashes and crashes, valor and vomit, that have distinguished the Quijote as a funny book for more than four centuries. Winner of the 2024 Walker Reid Comedia Performance Prize, from the Association for Hispanic Classical Theatre.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Quijóteres, shadow - THE PLAY</image:title>
<image:caption>¡QUIJÓTERES! is a 45-minute, bilingual play representing just a few threads teased out from the countless, tangled, intertwined stories depicted in Cervantes’s classic tale. Featured episodes include Don Quijote’s preparations as a knight, his first introduction to Sancho Panza, his battles against armies and giants, various interactions with Sansón Carrasco (an intertextual fan of the novel), and even a metatheatrical puppet show within a puppet show staged by the novel’s own renowned puppeteer, Maese Pedro. Though reducing a nearly 1,000-page novel requires a truly Alexandrian amount of cutting, the resulting text strives to remain faithful, if not identical, to the core values and spirit of the original.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Quijóteres, shadow - THE AUDIENCE</image:title>
<image:caption>The play aims to serve two kinds of audiences: First, it imagines an audience of YOUNG CHILDREN, perhaps in an elementary school setting, with kids who do not understand Spanish and possess little to no familiarity with the Quijote. For this group, the play offers an engaging, comical, action-driven introduction to Spanish and to Cervantes’s misguided knight that encourages them to want to learn more. The second envisions an audience of STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS at the university level who speak Spanish and wield a firm enough understanding of the Quijote to recognize subtle references to events and characters detailed in the novel. For this group the play aims to highlight the beauty and flavor of the original language, certain nuances of the characters and their relationships, and some of the narrative innovations frequently cited as evidence of the book’s renown as the first modern novel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Quijóteres, shadow - THE CHARACTERS</image:title>
<image:caption>The performance features nearly 50 professionally designed, 3D-printed, and articulated shadow puppets—including monsters and windmills, sheep and soldiers, props and peasants—as well as multiple iterations of the play’s primary characters: DON QUIJOTE, depicted in varying states of victory and defeat along his heroic journey; SANCHO PANZA, Don Quijote’s squire and travelling companion; CERVANTES, the novel’s author and sometimes antagonist; SANSÓN CARRASCO, an intertextual fan of the novel, later disguised as a puppeteer.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5be5ca333917ee67c61a3514/af6ed8e0-8b0c-46a7-91db-642bf8aee089/2%2C_Hombre_Mujer.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Quijóteres, shadow - THE SCENERY</image:title>
<image:caption>Nearly twenty different backgrounds provide a wide range of unique settings across the La Mancha countryside. These images were created to resemble a “scrapbook” style by digitally “tearing” and colorizing pages from the early print edition of the novel. As a further homage to the play’s literary roots, “clouds” in the sky display the novel’s original chapter headings corresponding to the action representation in that moment of the performance.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5be5ca333917ee67c61a3514/d567e75c-1129-45e3-b2d1-4d73f8d38737/Screen+Shot+2024-02-19+at+2.49.23+PM.png</image:loc>
      <image:title>Quijóteres, shadow - THE IMAGINATION</image:title>
<image:caption>The play takes full advantage of dynamic visual strategies unique to shadow puppetry to engage the eyes as well as the mind. This is particularly effective during “transformation” scenes that move back-and-forth between the real world and Don Quijote’s imagination, such as a flock of sheep morphing into a field of armies in battle, or simple windmills twisting into tentacled giants. One of the most curious episodes in the novel provides an especially exciting and multi-layered moment in the play when Don Quijote encounters the travelling puppeteer Maese Pedro and shifts into the role of audience member, first viewing and later dramatically interfering with a puppet show within the puppet show.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dragoncillo’s largest shadow puppet stage, developed and maintained by Jason Yancey, uses a projection screen (8’2” tall and 9’6” wide) that is set up for video and sound, and requires a single power outlet for electricity. <image:title>Stages - Modern technology for telling stories with shadows</image:title>
<image:caption>The foundation for each show is a film or series of images that we rear-project onto a nylon screen supported by pipe and drape masking. As it plays the film not only supplies the backlight for the shadow puppet show, it allows for detailed background images that change themselves automatically throughout the performance, as well as built-in music and sound effects to accompany the action.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stages - Ready-made performance</image:title>
<image:caption>Immediately below the scene, in a portion of the projection visible only to the puppeteers, the film displays two columns of scrolling dialogue and stage directions. This feature removes the need for memorization without a reliance on “canned” or recorded dialogue. The performers simply follow along with the film, manipulating the puppet in the light, while reading their lines off the screen. In this way Dragoncillo shows maintain high production values but require very little time to rehearse.</image:caption>
